PREFERRED TERM
gas chromatograph - mass spectrometer
DEFINITION
- Instrument designed for measuring the chemical composition of a gaseous or vapourisable sample by passing it through a column of extended length, where the column is heated with a defined temperature program. The time for a component to pass through the column depends on the chemical nature of the component. Subsequently, the separated components are identified and quantified by analysing them by means of mass spectrometry.
