Raman polarization lidar
DEFINITION
- Instrument that transmits single-wavelength pulsed laser light into the atmosphere and collects the backscattered radiation at the laser wavelength as well as the backscattered radiation from the atmospheric nitrogen due to the frequency Raman shift of the transmitted light. Furthermore, it can collect at least one of the backscattered polarization components of the linearly polarized emitted laser light. The system provides spatially resolved aerosol optical properties and aerosol geometrical features: i.e., layer height and thickness, aerosol backscatter and extinction coefficient at the laser wavelength without reliance on a priori assumptions, and volume and particle depolarization ratios at the laser wavelength.
